Examination Scheme & Pattern

Pre-COVID Compulsory Question Pattern Restored:

Starting from NEET-UG 2027, NTA continues to enforce the pre-COVID compulsory question format. The question paper comprises 180 compulsory questions to be completed in 180 minutes. There are no optional sections or internal choice formats.

Marking Criteria & Rules

  • Correct Answer: Awarded four marks (+4).
  • Incorrect Option: Deducted one mark (-1).
  • Unanswered/Unattempted: No mark (0).
  • Multiple Correct Options: If more than one option is correct, candidates who marked any of the correct options receive +4.
  • All Options Correct: If all options are found correct, all who attempted the question receive +4.
  • Dropped Questions: If a question is found wrong or dropped, all candidates who appeared in the test receive four marks (+4), irrespective of whether they attempted it.

Crucial Bilingual & Translation Rules:
  • English Only: Booklets provided only in English.
  • Hindi/Regional: Provided as bilingual booklets (English + Hindi/Regional).
  • Translation Disputes: For correctness of questions in any language, the English version will be treated as final and binding.
  • Regional languages are only available in exam centers located within their respective states (e.g. English+Assamese in Assam centers only).

Eligibility & Codes

Age Limitations

  • Lower Age Limit: Candidates must have completed 17 years of age on or before 31st December of the admission year.
  • For General/EWS: Candidates must be born on or before 31.12.2010.
  • Upper Age Limit: Following the NMC communication, there is no upper age limit for appearing in the exam.

Qualifying Examination Codes

Code 01 Candidate appearing in Class 12 exams in the exam year (result awaited).
Code 02 Higher Secondary / Senior Secondary Examination (Class 12) from CBSE, ICSE, or State Boards after 12 years of study.
Code 03 Intermediate / Pre-degree examination in Science of an Indian University/Board with Physics, Chemistry, Biology & English.
Code 04 Pre-professional / Pre-medical examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology after passing Class 12.
Code 05 First year of three-year degree course in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
Code 06 B.Sc. passed from an Indian University with not less than two of the subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany, Zoology).
Code 07 Any other examination which in scope and standard is found to be equivalent to Intermediate Science.

Counselling & Reservation Policies

15% All India Quota (AIQ)

Conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of DGHS. Open to all qualifying candidates across India for Central Universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, and Deemed Universities.

85% State Quotas

Conducted by respective State Medical Counselling Authorities (DMEs). Allotments are based on state domicile rules and merit scores.

Q1: In the Biology syllabus, it specifies "of an insect (Frog)". Is a frog classified as an insect? NTA Official Reply:

No, this is a minor syntax typo. The syllabus description should be read as "of an insect and a frog".

Q2: Are there changes to the syllabus structure compared to the previous year? NTA Official Reply:

No, there are no changes to the topics. The syllabus for the current cycle is identical to the previous year's curriculum guidelines.

Q3: How are translation discrepancies on the question booklet resolved? NTA Official Reply:

In case of translation ambiguity, the English version of the question is treated as final and binding.

Q4: Is there an upper limit on the number of attempts a candidate can take? NTA Official Reply:

No, there are no limits on attempts, nor is there a maximum age limit to appear in the examination.
